Oxford Street – Discover Sydney’s Gay Heart

The Epicenter of Gay Sydney

Sydney’s Oxford Street is to gay nightlife what glitter is to a fabulous drag show—essential. Known as Sydney’s “Gay Mile,” this bustling stretch of bars, clubs, and saunas is where you’ll find the city’s queer pulse in full force. Our recommendation if you planning a night on Oxford Street is to plan ahead, and check what open or closed, as for various reasons today there are days when bars are closed, or restaurants take last orders at 7:30 pm, so a little planning ahead is needed to make sure you can go to where you want to go! Its just seems to be the case that this is Sydney today.

Top Oxford Street Bars and Clubs

Universal

A multi-level bar offering sleek cocktails, an inclusive dance floor, and some of Sydney’s most exciting drag shows. It was one of the first stops whenever we were in town, and it goes back to the days of one of my stomping grounds when living in Sydney (The bar is called something else in those days). But we always have a great night when we stop by late at Universal.

Stonewall

A historic LGBTQ+ bar known for its epic parties and strong community ties. Each night delivers unique themes, from karaoke to drag revues. Check the calendar this bar typically has theme nights but on our last trip in November 2024, the bar was only open on the weekends which was quite disappointing so plan ahead people!

The Oxford Hotel

A local landmark where you can enjoy a relaxed drink downstairs or head to the more lively upstairs dance floor. Who can resist a drink at the Oxford Hotel? There is also a great pub grub if you get there early and need a quick bit.

The Columbian Hotel

Exceptional DJs, dance beats, and fantastic mojitos make this club stand out on Oxford Street. An old haunt of someone, this is always on our stops in Sydney for a few drinks, great tunes and people-watching. Venture in for a beer or a bite, or venture up to the Columbian rooftop!

Saunas in Oxford Street

For when you need a moment to recharge or release, Sydney’s saunas are a popular attraction within the LGBTQ+ community.

Sydney Sauna

Known for its relaxing vibe, this sauna features private spaces, communal areas, and events exclusively for gay men. The multi-layer sauna has clean showers and facilities with a large open spa bath, adjacent to the steam room and sauna of course. There are hidden spaces and cabins through the 2 floors if you need some quiet time.

Sauna X

A modern sauna offering cutting-edge facilities where relaxation and fun collide. Many theme evenings so best to check, including mixed evenings, whatever that is! It’s the next generation of gay saunas from those who brought us the infamous 365 in China Town.

Pro Tip: Be mindful of entry rules and ID requirements —some nights or events may cater specifically to different parts of the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Final Word – Sydney Awaits

Sydney isn’t just a city; it’s an open invitation for LGBTQ+ travelers to be themselves explore and have fun. From the iconic sights to the vibrant nightlife along Oxford Street, Gay Sydney is every traveler’s dream destination

Be it Sydney has, in reality, fallen asleep a bit over the last couple of years compared to other international cities. Outside of the cost in recent years which has skyrocketed, the thing that does stand out on our return trips is the fact that the city is asleep half the time you are there. What was once buoyant and bussing is now more sober with the introduction of regulations and the recovery process of COVID-19. Be it may, it’s still a fabulous city to visit and explore for gay travellers.

Whether you’re here to experience the culinary offerings, historic attractions, or the legendary Sydney Mardi Gras, you’re sure to leave with memories as bright and colorful as the city’s rainbow flags.
