Gay Melbourne Guide: Your Ultimate Gay Travel Guide to Slay the City

By admin

Welcome to Melbourne, darling! Australia’s cosmopolitan queen of culture isn’t just about laneways, incredible coffee, and fabulous art galleries—it’s also a pulsating hotspot for LGBTQ+ travellers ready to live their best life. Known for its vibrant queer scene, world-class food, and chic accommodations for all budgets and styles, this is your ultimate guide to experience “Gay Melbourne”.

From touching down in the city to sipping cocktails in an iconic gay bar, here’s everything you need to know to make your visit in Melbourne as fabulous as possible.

Arriving in Melbourne and Getting to the City

Touchdown glamour awaits you at Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine). You can arrive in style with these easy transportation options:

  • SkyBus: A convenient (not so glamorous but hey a good price) and affordable way to get to Melbourne’s CBD. Buses run every 10 minutes (fare starts at AUD $22).
  • Taxi or Uber: It’s around a 20- to 30-minute ride into the city (approx. $60-$70, but we warned of public holiday surcharges; we paid $120 on the meter on a public holiday, so be warned people!) for a taxi or $45-$55 via Uber).
  • Car Rentals: For queens wanting to explore beyond Melbourne, car rentals are available, but beware—Melbourne traffic might steal your thunder.

Getting Around Melbourne

Once you’re in the city, the best way to explore is by hopping on a tram. Melbourne’s iconic trams are a free and efficient way to get around the CBD. We found the city tram network confusing for the first day as there is so much jumbled info online. We were quite confused on what was a free tram, be it the historic tram that comes through every 40 mins or so, or every tram?

Long story short, all the trams are free in the city centre. There is no need to tap on or off and the “free” trams run around the city circuit. There are also announcements on the tram when you are about to leave the free zone – so no need to worry!

For longer trips, use ride-share apps or the Myki card to access trains and buses. And for short distances, throw on your sleekest sneakers and walk the laneways—it’s where you’ll find Melbourne’s magic (and its gay-friendly hidden gems!).

We found Uber the best solution to get around in the evening in areas outside the CBD, but found the best way to get around was on foot to discover the city and hidden spots.

Discovering Gay Melbourne

Melbourne’s gay scene is serving iconic realness, darling. This fabulous city has a vibe that’s hard to resist—though it’s not exactly a 24/7 playground. Much like Sydney, many of the gay venues have embraced a more selective schedule, opening only on certain days or for special events (and yes, sadly, some even ghost on event nights like Melbourne Cup much to our disappointment when there!). But don’t fret! Grab your best heels and fiercest outfit because we’ve got the lowdown on where to strut your stuff.

Gay Bars

Time to don your flannel, stroke your (imaginary or very real) beard, and head to The Laird, Melbourne’s unapologetically rugged haven for bears and the boys who love them. Step into this sanctuary of masculine charm and feel the timber-lined walls practically hum “channel your inner lumberjack.” Whether you’re here to grab a beer, lock eyes across the bar, or revel in the kind of camaraderie that only exists in a space so authentic, The Laird never disappoints. It’s as much about the vibe as it is about the community—welcoming, grounded, and almost annoyingly charming. Perfect for those nights when your Grindr grid just isn’t giving.

POOF DOOF is the party that travels wherever it wants, bringing with it drag stars, throbbing DJ beats, and more glitter than your rainbow soul could dream. Each “doof” is like stepping into a kaleidoscopic wonderland of queer euphoria. It’s high-energy, unapologetically fabulous, and just a little bit cheeky. Gay Sauna & Massage

Darling, whether you’re looking to relax, mingle, or surrender to some sumptuous self-care, Melbourne’s sauna scene is serving heat—and not just from the steam rooms. From intimate massages in the CBD to sprawling spaces that welcome the queer community with open arms (and a towel), here’s your guide to three fabulous hotspots.

Subway Sauna (South Yarra)

Tucked away in the chic heart of South Yarra, Subway Sauna is where sophistication meets steamy relaxation. A favorite among discerning locals, this urban retreat is all about fabulous facilities and the perfect balance of downtime and conversation. Can we talk about the steam room? It’s hotter than a gossip session at brunch.

With clean, modern amenities and a vibe that feels welcoming yet intimate, Subway Sauna is where you go to treat yourself. Lounge in the sauna, make a splash in the spa pool, or sip a cheeky beverage while mingling in the social areas. The clientele? Polished, diverse, and oh-so-charming—perfect for a cheeky chat or simply an admiring glance. Whether you’re in it for the relaxation or the socialising, Subway will have you melting (in the best way possible).

Wet on Wellington (Collingwood)

Step into Wet on Wellington, Melbourne’s reigning queen of gay saunas. Located in Collingwood, it’s the city’s largest spot of its kind—and it doesn’t skimp the space. This venue is as modern as it gets with sleek designs, plenty of room to mingle, and some sizzling weekly events. If you’re wondering where all the action happens, darlings, you’ve found it.

Hot tubs, private rooms, a massive sauna, AND a pool? Plus, their iconic events are a vibe—think drag queens, DJ beats, and a crowd that knows how to werk it. It’s truly a pulsating haven for the gay community, and whether you’re looking to relax, spice up your evening, or just bask in Melbourne’s gay sauna culture, Wet on Wellington serves it all on a rainbow platter.

The Male Therapist — Remedial Massage & Sauna (Melbourne CBD)

If your body is screaming for sweet release (and we mean your sore muscles, darling), The Male Therapist has the remedy. Nestled in the CBD, this spa delivers a professional yet sensual experience that’s all about making you feel like royalty.

While it’s a smaller, more personal experience compared to the sprawling saunas, this space focuses on the art of touch. The skilled therapists practically have magic hands, working their way through every knot with elegance and ease. Add the sauna to the mix, and you’ve got the perfect setup for indulgence. This isn’t a place for flirty mingling—it’s about deep relaxation, one-on-one pampering, and walking away feeling like a brand-new you.

Final Thoughts on Gay Melbourne

Melbourne, darling, is a city that calls every gay traveler to live proudly, indulgently, and fabulously. From decadent dining to sizzling nightlife, it offers a delectable cocktail of experiences to sip on. But—and here’s the tea, sweeties—post-COVID, the city can sometimes feel like it’s taken a little nap compared to its global siblings in Europe or Asia.

Over a recent public holiday, we sashayed out in search of Melbourne’s famed gay scene, only to find many spots closed, including bars and clubs. It’s clear the city isn’t serving seven-days-a-week escapades like some of its international counterparts. But with the right intel (and perhaps a little pre-planning to hit the hotspots when they’re open), there’s still plenty of fun to be had.

Now, let’s talk about the surprise costs lurking like uninvited party guests. Saturday surcharges at bars? A cheeky 3% credit card fee for food and drinks—even when cash isn’t accepted? Darling, Melbourne’s surcharge culture is definitely a thing, and not just in queer spaces. To be fair, Sydney has dabbled in this, too, though Melbourne does seem to be leading the charge.

That said, despite the logistical quirks, Melbourne still knows how to deliver a good time. Plan wisely, sprinkle a little glitter, and you’ll find this city still has plenty of fabulous moments worth exploring.

Pack your glitter, book a stay at a fabulous gay hotel in Melbourne, and start planning the itinerary of a lifetime. Need help crafting the perfect trip? Share this guide and tag your travel squad! Time to slay, darling.
