It’s not your typical gay destination by any means, but it is a delightful coastal town in Northern New South Whales in Australia, famed for its chilled layed back coast style and lots of seafood. So we are hooked. It’s also a well know getaway during school holidays in Australia for families and couples, so we timed out trip just towards the end of the holiday season to see what Yamba has going for it. So pack your bags, darlings, because Yamba, is calling, and it’s offering a sun-soaked escapade you won’t want to miss! Whether you’re a beach bum, seafood addict, or just looking for a laid-back Aussie vibe, this coastal gem really has it all for those wanting to escape the pulsating pulse of city life.
Beaches, Breathtaking Views, and Serene Shorelines
Our first stop to discover the best beaches in Yamba was Dolphin Park at Wooli Bay. Picture this—a long stretch of golden sand, crystal-clear ocean water gently lapping at your feet, and nothing but the sound of waves for company. It’s the perfect backdrop for a romantic stroll with your partner or some solo soul-searching. And if you’re lucky enough, you’ll have the entire 6.6 km beach all to yourself. How’s that for a start to you exclusive gay Yamba getaway?
The Main Beach Yamba offers a protected ocean bay and even has its own rock pool to do laps in. There a small little cafe beach side if you need something to drink or a bite to eat and its also home to one of the oldest Surf Life Saving clubs in Australia! To access the beach you need to walk down the embankment, from the top of the cliff but it’s a easy walk down the path for anyone to access.
Next, head on over to the Yamba Lighthouse. This tranquil lookout offers panoramic vistas perfect for those Instagram-worthy shots that will make your friends green with envy. Get ready to capture the stunning coastline as the sea breeze whispers sweet nothings in your ear.
Charming Town Vibes and Tantalizing Tastes
Central Yamba is a quaint little town where you’ll find everything you need—from the cheekily named “happy” supermarket to charming cafes and restaurants. When we first walked though, we felt like it was reminiscent scene from Shit’s Creek, theres a cafe, a boutique and some shops, all located on the Main Street of the town.
As you explore, indulge in some craft beer and grub at the Wobbly Chook Brewery. With great food and even better company, it’s the place to unwind after a day of exploring. If you’re craving classic Aussie fish and chips, Yamba’s Fisho is a must-visit. Grab a takeaway and enjoy it in the nearby park with breathtaking ocean views, it was one of our favourite lunch experiences while here.
And for those charming lakeside afternoons? Yamba Shores Tavern awaits! Lounge by the pristine lake with a cold beer in hand, watch the sun dip below the horizon, and feel the stresses of everyday life fade away. Theres bistro there, with quite a mixed Aussie and Asia Aussie menu. We were quite surprised to see some Australian Thai Infused dishes on the menu but gave it miss for the more local cuisines there.
For the adventurous souls, renting a boat to explore the waters is a fabulous way to discover Yamba from a new angle. No license? No worries! You can hire one for just AUD 150 per hour—perfect for a little cruise on the wild side.
Seafood Lovers, This Is Your Paradise
If you’re anything like us, the mere mention of King Prawns and rock lobsters will set your heart aflutter. Yamba’s seafood is a slice of heaven, and you’ll find the freshest catches at the local market. You can buy it can cook yourself, or buy it fresh they will cook it up for you! Trust me, your taste buds will do a happy dance.
The other place we found in the center of the town is Fisho’s Seafood, which is a local fish and chip shop, but they also sell fresh seafood that you can take away and cook. The Sea Scollops and King Prawns we got from them were just fantastic and fresh!
Where to Stay and Play
While Yamba doesn’t have dedicated gay accommodations, fear not. Options like Moby Dicks Resort offer comfy, modern stays with apartment-style rooms next to the marina. But if you really want to feel like a local, our top tip is to book a holiday rental close to Main Beach. The town is fully set up for holiday apartment rentals, with what seems an endless supply for all budgets and styles.
For ou stay, we chosse a cozy one-bedroom house with its own kitchen and outdoor terrace means you can play host and experience gay holidays in Yamba like never before. The accommodaiton was mondern and excellent and gave us lots of space to stretch out and chill, as well as entertain and cook, and live like we are at home.

Getting Around Yamba
Well, its a small town, so the best bet is to pick a location close to the key areas, and walk around, take in the fresh air and enjoy the local experience. For us, we also opted to rent a car for the local car rental. There are two in the Marina area, located in the same office to make life even easier, with Thrifty Car Rental and Hertz. We opted for Hertz for a small hatchback car which was perfect for around AUD $150 per day with full insurance allowing us to zoom around to the spots we wanted to explore in Yamba.
There is a taxi sevice in Yamaba if needed as well a Uber but naturally its not like being in the city with a fleet of Uber drivers waiting for jobs. If your more inclined to take a bus, there is a local bus service too around different parts of Yamba.
